Say Ciao Adios! to the summer holiday flight price hike and hit the rails to the Italian Riviera instead! Europe is cross-crossed by an impressive network of efficient, high-speed trains - and they make for a surprisingly stress-free way to travel, especially with kids. A few years ago, we were invited to a beautiful wedding in Italy in the Summer holidays and flights were astronomical at the time we were booking, so instead, we embarked on an adventure taking our three kids across Italy on the train and it was so much less stressful than we’d anticiapated - Florrie was only 10 weeks old at the time, Tom was 4 and Teddy was 8 years old and we all really enjoyed it. There were reserved seats so no scamble when you got on, gorgeous views, space to do travel activities to keep the kids entertained and plenty of room for a buggy and our huge bags (the like of which you only ever pack with a newborn in tow)!

Punctual, comfortable and fast, there are two principal Italian train companies operating high-speed services - the state-owned Trenitalia and the other privately owned Italo. With no check-in, baggage restrictions and four classes of service to choose from, this eco-friendly option is a more leisurely way to arrive at your destination.

Trenitalia’s ticket classes are Standard, Premium, Business and Executive. Italo’s classes are Smart, Comfort, Prima and Club Executive. All ticket classes feature free Wi-Fi, power sockets and air conditioning and Italio also has reclining leather seats in its lowest Smart class, offering fantastic value. On Italo, Comfort seats offer more leg-room, Prima includes complimentary wine and snacks and meals that can be ordered to your seat. Club Executive features an open salon that will seat up to 11 passengers and salottinos that seat 4, perfect for families. Each seat has a small touch-screen tv, meals can be ordered to your seat and you have the services of a dedicated steward, complimentary drinks and use of the Club Italo lounges at the train station - (British rail companies - please take note!)
